"Judges are free to pick court-appointed experts, but in the toxic tort area (injury caused by toxic chemicals, waste, etc.) they most often do not know where to turn. The result is one of 'hired guns' providing expertise for one or both sides of the litigation." (Gostin, p.207)

Given that the "hired guns" referred to above would be epidemiologists or other public health experts, is it ethical for an expert to take a position that does not promote public health? Why?
