Julie, a professor at a Canadian university has a boyfriend, Romeo, in Italy. In her non-teaching term, May 1st to August 31st, Romeo visits and they hike the local mountains and surf the coast. Romeo also visits Dec. 1st to January 31st for them to enjoy the holidays and ski. In Italy Romeo lives with his elderly parents for whom he is the primary caregiver. When in Canada, his sister cares for their parents in the summer and his brother in the winter. Romeo, a chef, offers in-home cooking lessons and writes articles for various magazines. Two years into their relationship (2019), Julie bought a small apartment in Italy to use when she travels to Italy and rent out through airbnb at other times. A year after this purchase (2020), she decided to take a two-year sabbatical from her job, move into her apartment in Italy, and complete her PhD dissertation. She rented out her home in Canada on a two-year lease. Advise both Julie and Romeo as to their tax situations.
