Ken was injured at his job. As a result, he is paid certain amounts, all of which relate to this injury. He gets a $20,000 disability payment from a disability insurance policy that his employer had paid the premiums for. This policy was provided as a tax-free benefit to Ken. The employer had paid the $10,000 annual premiums on this policy.
In addition, Ken incurred $6,000 in medical expenses, all of which he was reimbursed for under his employer provided health insurance plan. Kens employer paid $10,000 annually in premiums to provide this health insurance coverage to Ken. Finally, Ken received three more payments. One was for $40,000 received for damages for the personal injuries he suffered (two broken legs). Another $20,000 for emotional harm caused him. The other was $100,000 for punitive damages! How much of all these payments received by Ken is taxable to him included in his AGI?
