Ketoacids are important compounds in the pharmaceutical industry and are typically produced through a batch process. The process recipe for the manufacture of a ketoacid from a corresponding ketoester is described below: Ketoester (C22H23ClO5) (40 kg) in a mixture of methanol (300L) and aqueous sodium hydroxide (2M,100L) is to be heated at reflux for 1 hour, cooled to 40C and then methanol is to be removed by distillation at reduced pressure. The resulting solution is cooled to 10C, acidified with hydrochloric acid (5 M) to pH1 and the mixture extracted with ethyl acetate (2100L). The organic extracts are to be combined, washed with water (50L), concentrated by distillation to 80L and cooled. The ketoacid product (C21H21ClO5) crystallises and is to be isolated by filtration, followed by washing with ethyl acetate (210L) and drying under vacuum at 40C (a) Use the process recipe provided above to sketch a process flow diagram (or batch process layout) for the above process. You may draw this by hand or use an appropriate software to do so. Use standard chemical engineering symbols to represent any equipment you show on your diagram. [6 marks] (b) You are now tasked with starting the chemical engineering design procedure for this process. Briefly describe your design philosophy by commenting on (i) the information you would require to start the design and (ii) the key bottlenecks you would have to consider as part of your design.
