Kiernan has been a 5th grade teacher for six years. He has been at Podunk Elementary School all six years and was just asked to join the School Study Team as a regular member. Other members on the team include Barnaby (3rd grade teacher), Chamiqua (counselor), Carson (Special Ed teacher), Amy (6th grade teacher), and Claire (vice- principal). At the first meeting, a new PE teacher named Jose came in to discuss his difficulties with a particular student. Kiernan was impressed to see Carson guide the team through the problem solving steps he had learned in one of his education classes. Nearly everyone participated in the discussion and brainstorming, except Claire. It seemed that when it came time to evaluate the suggestions (many of which seemed great to Kiernan and to Jose), Claire found reasons they would not work. She cited financial concerns, legal implications, and time constraints. Kiernan offered ways to mitigate these concerns and still keep the crux of the suggestions but Claire simply said "no". Kiernan was somewhat surprised to hear the others then agree with Claire, except for Jose who said nothing. Claire then referred back to one of her ideas and the others enthusiastically agreed that it would be a good starting point. Kiernan tried to tie it once again in with the other suggestion, finding a way to incorporate them both, but again Claire vetoed the idea. Jose seemed to tacitly accept the idea but left without much enthusiasm.
