Stressors- Making Stress Your Friend

"Aging is nothing more than the sum total of the scars left by the stress of life" explains Hans Selye, the father of stress research. And, a Persian proverb says that time spent fishing is not deducted from your life span. Between the two points on the continuum is the amount of "life" for which stress robs us.

Almost anything is a potential stressor. It only need be identified as such by your thoughts. However, for purposes of organization, stressors can be divided into two different categories:

  • External:stressors that originate from sources from ouroutside environment and not necessarily in our immediate control (traffic is a major external stressor).
  • Internal: those dealing with aspects of our life over which we have almost exclusive control. (i.e., = conflicting roles)
  • As if all this were not enough,our physiology was not developed to handle loud noise so it can cause some unexpected other problems.
