In the 70 years from its founding in 1948, South Korea transformed itself from an impoverished, agrarian nation into a hyper-modern and prosperous society. Authoritarian governmental structures gave way to democracy, even as old-fashioned corporate governance structures persisted. In the eyes of some, it was the most extraordinary story of economic development and market emergence in human history. Yet, with an aging population, and the totalitarian North Korean government continuing to pursue its nuclear ambitions, past successes were no guarantee for the future. How had South Korea gotten to where it was, what lessons did it hold for the rest of the world, and where might it be heading now?
