Kyle was injured in 2021 when he fell from his ladder while trimming one of the trees on his property. While he was able to throw the running chain saw in the opposite direction from which he was falling, he still fell from the top rung of the ladder and when he landed, broke his elbow in 3 places and smashed his mouth, knocking out two front teeth. His wife Linda was going to rush him to the hospital except that while she was running to help Kyle, she tripped on the running chain saw and sliced open her foot. Both of them required emergency surgery to fix their injuries. Fortunately, Linda works for an employer who provides excellent medical insurance for which she pays only 25% of the annual premium. The total annual premium for the policy was $10,000. The deductible for Kyles surgery and subsequent hospital visit totaled $3,200. Lindas surgery and hospital stay cost them only $800 (as their family deductible is a maximum of $4,000). Later in the year, both of them had their wisdom teeth removed at a post insurance cost to them of $4,000. The dentist recommended braces for Kyle to help straighten his teeth and better hold the implants from his new false teeth as well as to make his smile better. Kyle thought that was a good idea and incurred the $8,000 cost during 2021 for the braces. The pain from Kyles broken elbow was sometimes so intense that the only thing that helped was medicinal marijuana for which he paid $1,000 for the year (nothing but the best for Kyle). The pain medications for them both also cost another $600 for the year. Their adjusted gross income for 2021 is $188,000 and they plan on itemizing their deductions. What will be their medical deduction on their California income tax return?
