Lab 05: Forces and Motion Phys 1010 FA22 Names of lab partners: Introduction In this experiment, we will use simulations to explore forces and Newton's 2nd Law. Objectives . Seeing the relationship between the net force and the speed of an object. Software The simulation software "Forces and Motion" developed by University of Colorado. http://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/forces-and-motion- basics/latest/forces-and-motion-basics_en.html Setting Up Verify that everyone can share screens. Verify everyone can access the simulation. The home page is shown below. Part II. Motion Next, we'll move to the simulation called motion. At the bottom of the screen you should see four pictures. The pictures take you to the different simulations. Click on the picture for motion. 1. You should see the following screen. Applied Force 0 Newtons -500 500 2. Select the checkboxes: Forces, Values, Masses and Speed Force Values Masses Speed 3. This one can be a bit confusing. There are two ways to make the dummy move the skateboard. You can either use the slider or use the forward/backward buttons to increase the force. Click, hold, then drag the slider all the way to the right to 500 N and hold it. Eventually the dummy will dramatically stop pushing. a. (2 pts.) After the dummy stops pushing it, what is the speed of the skateboard? b. (2 pts.) Using Newton's 2nd Law, explain what is happening to the speed after the dummy stops pushing. Think about the force acting on the skateboard and its acceleration
