Lab #2 Lens Parameters In this experiment the laser in the kit and knowledge of lens parameters will be used to discover what the focal length of the lens is. As seen in the illustration, light incident on the lens is bent an amount due to its curvature, and the rays converge on the Foct focal length, which is a characteristic of the lens parameters. Parallel Incident P To set up this lab, place the lens in the lens holder as shown to the right, aligning it on graph paper. Some distance between the lens and a backdrop is needed as seen in the picture to the right. This shows the laser pointed through the middle and down the middle line (the reflection on the lens itself is off due to the photograph angle). Line A in diagram below shows this center line and can be drawn without the laser at first - just straight down the middle to the backdrop. A BiConvex Lens 00 Moving the laser to the left or right will shine the light on the edges of the lens. Because of the curvature, the light will be bend when traveling to the backdrop. Notice that the laser will strike the backdrop to the left and right of the center line when moved to the right and left respectively. Carefully draw these lines as seen in diagram on the previous page. Where the three lines intersect is called the focal point of the lens. Measure that distance from the center of the lens to that point, along the A path. Record this in millimeters. Do this several times to verify.1. For a lens, the focal length will change if: a. The distance between the object and backdrop changes b. The lens is moved c. The distance to the viewer changes d. It is physically altered 2. What makes the light through a convex lens converge at a point? a. The material of the lens is different at different points b. The lens colors the light differently at the ends and thus moves the angle like a prism c. The lens curves to deflect the light inward 3. A certain convex lens is 3 centimeters wide. When light passes through its edge on the perpendicular, it bends the light at an angle towards the center at 30 degrees. What is the focal length? Content and Analysis 1. Methodology This laboratory discovered the focal length of the lens in the kit. Please detail the exact methodology used to create and discover this, including the number of attempts and any variance seen for each attempt. 2. Data Collection - Using your graph paper sketch your lens parameter experiment setup, marking all important features and distances with units. Your instructor may require you to submit a picture via email or through other mechanisms. 3. Data Analysis Show the calculations and equations used to discover the focal length of the lens, including all iterations of the experiment. 4. Conclusion - Report the focal length ofthe lens in millimeters. 5. Caveats - In doing this experiment, it is obvious that alignment and accuracy is important. Please describe below what difficulties in set up and equipment were encountered, and what was done to mitigate them
