Lab number 20 Reactions of amines Introduction: The purpose of this experiment is to study some of the chemical properties of butylamine (an alkylamine) and compare it with the properties of ammonia. You will also use an arylamine called phhenylamine in one reaction. Aim: To study some of the chemical properties of butylamine (an alkylamine) and compare it with the properties of ammonia Procedure: A. Solubility in water 1. Into a test tube add 2 drops of butlyamine, 10 drops of water and shake. Note whether the amine appears to dissolve. 2. Using a clean glass rod test one drop of the solution with universal indicator paper. Compare the pH of the solution with that of distilled water alone and then with that of ammonia bench reagent. B. Reaction with Hydrochloric acid fecme hood 3. Into a test tube add 5 drops of butlyamine, 5 drops of water and shake. 4. Drop by drop, add enough conc. HCl to obtain a clear solution, (about 5 drops). 5. In a fume hood, pour the contents of the test tube on a watch glass and if the product is not already solid, allow to evaporate slowly. Note your observations. 6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 , starting with 10 drops of ammonia solution. C. Reaction with Copper (II) sulphate solution 7. Into a test tube, add about 2ml of copper II sulphate solution. 8. Drop by drop add butlyamine, shaking the mixture all the time until the butlyamine is in excess. Note your observations. 9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 with aqueous ammonia. D. Reaction with nitrous acid fume hond 10. Dissolve 2 drops of phenylamine in 5ml of dilute HCl. Add this solution to about 5ml of iced water in a boiling tube surrounded by crushed ice. Ensure that the temperature of the solution in the boiling tube is about 5C and add a spatula of sodium nitrite. Stir with a glass rod. solution to below 5C in the ice bath. Table showing the results of various tests which were conducted with Butylamine, ammonia and phenylamine. 12. Add the cooled phenlyamine mixture to the cooled phenol solution. Note your observations.
