Labour relations questions. are you able to help?
My discussion is to Research some interesting Labour Relations news headlines and share your learning and thoughts with the rest of the class. Labour is a dominant topic that appears frequently in the news. You will be surprised of the amount of coverage there is on a daily basis! By reading the news it will also give you a good understanding of how environmental factors can impact business and labour unions. I chose police unions and am having trouble with some it the info. Below is what i have so far. Can you read it over?
Police Union - defunding and restructuring of the police force
Due to recent events of excessive force while detaining a suspect, officers who abuse their power because they are wearing a uniform make the rest of the force of good police officers look bad
The past few weeks have been about protestors all over the world demanding for the defunding and restructuring of all police forces. Even though this has been going on for years the most recent is when George Floyd of the USA was killed at the hands of three police officer.
Defunding law enforcement "means that we are reducing the ability for law enforcement to have resources that harm our communities."
The union tries to protect their members as much as possible, therefore, they will have to work with the cities to work out corruption within the police forces to restructure for community-oriented policing. One example of community-oriented policing is in Camden, New Jersey, about 7 years ago all police officers in that city were laid off due to corruption, the union was removed as well. Since then and without a union the city rehired some of the good police officers and hired new recruits to be retrained and trained to do community-oriented policing. Even though this has not changed the status of the city from the most dangerous in the USA their homicides have dropped from over 60 to 30 and under. Some say they are seeing more police cruisers around which to them is 'over policing'.
Systematic oppression happens everywhere, and Canada is no exception. It was recently announced by the Mayor of Toronto that at the next Toronto Police Service Board meeting body worn cameras will be discussed and if passed some officers will be wearing them by the end of this summer. With body worn cameras the police and civilians are protected.
In Toronto, the mayor said recently that the protests havemotivated the city to "work harder"to eliminate systemic racism in our city.
He went on to say, "We are going to set the standard in Toronto for making sure that racism becomes a thing of the past and that's a big challenge. But I think it is one we can take on and I think our values suggest we need to take it on even more aggressively and energetically than we have".
