Laila is the owner of a large bakery. Recently Tama, who is one of the bakers, asked her whether he could reduce his working hours over the school holidays to spend more time with his children. Laila told Tama that she would not consider his request as it would be inconvenient to rearrange the roster. Tama pointed out that Yu Yan, one of the other bakers, is always allowed to take time off over the school holidays but Laila replied that this is because Yu Yan is a mother. Laila believes it is more important that children spend time with their mother than their father.
Laila also has an arrangement with Steve who helps in the shop when it is busy. Steve is not guaranteed any hours of work, but it is understood that when Laila calls him into work, he is expected to be available. Steve is paid $18 per hour. Laila knows this is less than the minimum wage but considers Steve is often allowed to take left over bread home with him, so she feels he is fairly compensated for his work.
Laila has heard Tama and Steve have been saying she is a bad employer. She asks you for advice.
