1. Lanie Brown, a Latinx woman, thought she would make a great police officer. She was 29 years old, fit, and had a clean background record. Brown had military experience, including a tour of Iraq as a US Marine, and her commanding officer had written her a glowing recommendation. In 2019, armed with an associate degree in criminal justice, she felt ready to apply to become an officer with the New Haven Police Department, in her home state of Connecticut. Lanie sailed through the department's rigorous physical and mental tests, passing speed and agility trials and a written examinationbut there was one final test. The New Haven Police Department insists that each applicant take a polygraph test. Lanie took the test with a Caucasian male polygraph examiner certified by the American Polygraph Association and was judged to have lied on the test and failed for deception about occasional marijuana use as a minor. She claimed this was incorrect and requested a retake. The second test was with an African American male and she passed the test.
