Studies indicate that the females of the species may have a higher migratory success and flight ability. Researchers studied the sex-based morphological differences of monarch butterflies related to flight. They measured the weight (in mg) and surface area (in mm) of a sample of 92 monarch butterflies, all of which were reared in captivity in identical conditions. The data are available in the Large.Butterfly data file. 1. Download and open the data file. 2. Examine the relationship between forewing surface area (explanatory) and weight separately for the male (Male = 0) and female (Female = 1) butterflies. Describe the relationships and compute appropriate numerical summaries for the relationships. 3. Write a short paragraph describing the morphological differences between male and female monarch butterflies, referencing your work. 4. The researchers concluded that "female wings are generally sturdier," a finding "consistent with field observations made during the monarch migration, where wing condition (i.e., degree of damage and wear) of females has been found to be significantly better than those of male." Which aspect of your own analysis supports this interpretation? Explain your answer. 5. Upload one or more files in pdf format. Please convert (or print) any jmp files to pdf. Moodle cannot read or open jmp files. Large.Butterfly.jmp April 15 2022, 8:30 AM
