You are the management committee of Lawrenceville Medical Center (LMC), located in a mid-sized, mid-western city. LMC is a 157 bed, full service, outstanding acute care medical facility that has provided its community with advanced medical health-care services for over 45 years and is ranked one of the highest for patient satisfaction within the region. The Hospital has expanded recently as the population of the city has grown. It currently employs approximately 580 clinical and non-clinical staff.

As the workforce has grown, you have added several management positions. Currently, you have a new administrative manager position to fill. You have decidedto promote one of your high potential employees to this position. You want to be certain to make the best decision for the organization and select the best candidate.

The management committee will discuss and decide among the four candidates listed on the following page. However, before you begin your discussion, you review a recent memo you received from Carole Armstrong, the manager of HR. She expressed concern over the current composition of LMCs management team.

LMCs management team consists of the following positions:

1 Head Administrator (CEO)

5 Vice Presidents each heads one of the 5 major departments:

Administrative (includes Quality, Human Resources, Supporting Services, Purchasing and Logistics), Nursing, Finance, Information Technology, Medical Services (includes Laboratory, Radiology, Anesthesia,)

10 Managers (1 each for Quality, Human Resources, Supporting Services, Purchasing and Logistics, Nursing, Finance, Information Technology, Laboratory, Radiology, Anesthesia).

20 Supervisors (2 in Supporting Services and18 for Nursing for day and night shifts in the following departments: Emergency Department, Cardiology, Intensive care unit, Pediatric intensive care unit, Neonatal intensive care unit, Cardiovascular intensive care unit, Neurology, Oncology, Obstetrics and gynecology)

The employee base reflects the general population in terms of males, females, African-Americans, and Hispanics. However, other than the nursing area, the remainder of the management team consists of all white males with the exception of one white female manager in Human Resources (Carole).

While none of the employees has filed a formal complaint, Carole has overheard discussions of the situation. She feels that the possibility exists of a formal complaint. Moreover, she thinks that the organization may be missing the opportunity to utilize the talents of all of its employees.

You need to decide which candidate to promote. You also need to give specific reasons on why the candidate you selected is the most qualified. Promotion Candidates

Jeffrey Sullivan Has been with the hospital for 15 years. He is a Line Lead in

Supporting Services and has been an outstanding employee. He is knowledgeable and approachable. He never hesitates helping the workers on his shift when they have problems. His manager has recommended him in the past for promotion. The only area of concern his manager has mentioned is that Jeffrey always seems to go out of his way to avoid conflict. Jeffrey is a white male.

Megan Davis Has been with the hospital for 7 years. She has been a Line Lead in both Quality and Supporting Services and is currently a Line Lead in Purchasing and Logistics. She has a good work record. Unlike Jeffrey, Megan seems very capable of dealing with conflict and has resolved several situations without having to go to her manager. Megan has a college degree in Business Management and seems very eager to get ahead. Her manager has recommended her for promotion but does have a concern about the fact that she has had three separate FMLAs averaging 8 weeks each.

Megan is a white female.

Sandra Wilson Has been with the hospital 5 years. She is a Line Lead in Quality and has an excellent work record. Sandra is a quick learner and is always the first to volunteer for extra assignments and projects. She is a self-starter and is interested in improving her skills. Recently, she went back to school to work on a degree in Business Management. Although Sandras manager has recommended her for a promotion, he is somewhat concerned with her people skills because she is very outspoken. Sandra is usually right, but at times she seems to generate conflict. Sandra is an African-American female.

David Johnson Has been with the hospital for 2 years. He is a Line Lead Supporting Services and has good work record for the short time he has been with the company. He was promoted to a Line Lead within a year of joining the hospital. He seems to work well with everyone on his shift and is able to resolve small conflicts with minimal disruption. David has a college degree in Business Administration with an Accounting major and a Management minor. Although his manager has recommended David for a promotion, he has some concern about Davids lack of experience with the hospital. David is an African-American male.
