Guidance
The focus of this assignment is on analysing issues related to diversity and leadership in the contemporary environment and how these intersect
As an example of what we have in mind, you could examine Taylor Swift's youtube video of her song "The Man" and identify some diversity-related messages or themes conveyed by the song's lyrics as well as some diversity-related messages or themes conveyed by the video footage.
Note that because the analysis is about key 'messages or themes' this means, again, using the Taylor Swift 'The man' example, you're not restricted to just considering specific words in the song or individual scenes in the video imagery. Instead, you can consider more generally what key points the media object is making about issues of diversity.
By 'contemporary environment', we mean the media object you select raises issues that are still live and current today, not matters that are now a matter of history.
Having identified your key messages or themes, you'll then look to the scholarly literature on diversity and leadership. Taking each separately and in turn, the aim is to connect EACH key message or theme you identified to scholarly ideas about, firstly, diversity and then leadership, that help to explain what they mean and why they matter. To help with this you will find recommended readings related to diversity on Stream, in particular on the topic pages related to 'Leadership through place' and 'Leadership and gender'. You will find those same topics also have insights about leadership that are of particular relevance to this assignment. There will also be supplementary readings in the 'Reading List' on Stream that may be of help for this assignment.
Overall, up to this point, you've basically undertaken a case study analysis - and this covers the first three bullet points of the topic statement. The balance of the assignment is about drawing out the broader implications of what you've learned and relates to the last 2 bullet points of the topic statement.
For this, you'll reflect more generally or broadly on what you've come to realise about how diversity affects or relates to leadership and vice versa, drawing on scholarly ideas to help guide and justify your argument before, finally, setting out what you think all that means for what organisations should be doing in regards to leadership and its connection with diversity.
Your analysis will be evaluated against the marking rubric set out below in order to determine the marks to be awarded. Ensure that you read this rubric carefully to understand the quality indicators we look for when marking.
