Leading statement: In the ammonia production process, the reaction takes place at 8 0 0 to 1 0 0 0 atm, and between 5 0

Leading statement: In the ammonia production process, the reaction takes place at 800 to 1000 atm, and between
500 to 600 degrees Celsius, with a small fraction of the feedstock reacting in a single pass (one pass), so a recycle
is needed/used. The nitrogen is supplied from air containing 1% rare gases (unreactive), so a purge stream is
needed. The fresh feed (gas) contains 75.16% hydrogen, 24.57% nitrogen and 0.27% unreactive gasses. The fresh
feed is mixed with the recycle stream and enters the reactor with a composition of 79.52% hydrogen, with the gas
leaving the Ammonia separator containing 80.01% hydrogen and no ammonia, with the final product containing no
other dissolved gasses or impurities. For 100 moles of feed per hour, a) how many moles are recycled, purged?
and b) what is the conversion of hydrogen per pass? Please refer to the schematic diagram, Figure 1.
Figure 1: Simplified illustration of the Haber process.
Tasks:
a) Solve the problems asked (a and b) as stated in the leading statement above. What about the value of the
reaction rate?
b) Research the conditions (temperature and pressure) and type of reactors used for the Haber process.
Note: Tabulate the conditions and reactor types, indicate whether there is a need for a catalyst [if there is,
name/type, characteristics (shape), etc.]. You can even list the type of the preferred type of separator. Compare
the overall conversion of either nitrogen or hydrogen to that published in literature. In your table, list applicable
references, and a bibliography must be included for this part.
c) From information in b), select optimum conditions, reactor type, and size, and list the applicable
performance equation (ODE) for the reactor chosen taking into conversion of either nitrogen or hydrogen.
d) Once the reactor type is selected, what will be the appropriate dimensions of such a reactor?
