Leah is a 20-year-old clerical assistant at the National Security Agency (NSA). She begins to research Islamic practices and decides she would like to convert. She has no formal training in the faith and does not know anyone personally who practices it. She becomes upset when she overhears officials talking about confidential information that she feels violates the privacy of everyday citizens. As her unhappiness with her job grows, she meets a man online who claims to be a fighter for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). After interacting with him for several months, she makes plans to join him in Syria to fight on behalf of and support in any way possible the ISIS fighters.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) learns of Leah's plans through social media postings she has made. She had previously been interviewed by the FBI after entering church grounds, sketching the layout of the facility, and angrily stating to church officials that she hated them and that they would be sorry for the way they treated her. The FBI reaches out to her parents to try to reason with her, but they are unsuccessful. Leah tells them that she will someday fight with ISIS, and she will bring information from the NSA to bring down the United States.

Three days later, the FBI arrest Leah before she can board a plane to Germany that will then take her to Turkey, where she is to meet in person the alleged fighter she has met online.
