Lesedi is 14 years old. Her educators are concerned about her progress at school. They want to know if Lesedi has a learning disability and might benefit from going to a special school. This would be a drastic change for Lesedi and would likely influence her subject choices and longterm career opportunities. Lesedi misses school regularly as she needs to stay home to look after her little brother when he is sick. Her mom is a single parent and relies on piece jobs as a domestic worker to provide for the family. Her mother cannot read or write and speaks very little English. Lesedi reports that she loves school and that she tries hard to do all her homework, but it is sometimes difficult to work out what she needs to do on her own and she has many interruptions from her little brother who is quite sickly. Lesedi also has to see that all the housework is done first before she can settle down. The family doesn't always have money for electricity or candles and so she finds it difficult to study/work after dark. Lesedi has helped her mom work out a budget so that they spend the little money they have wisely. She interprets for her mom when they take her brother to the doctor. The doctor has noted that Lesedi has been quite innovative in caring for her brother's medical needs on their constrained budget and circumstances.
