I interviewed my wife about the way we communicate and how we label each other. We both agreed that our communication was somewhat broken, but all in all, we are in a happy marriage. Our labeling of each other in the open quadrant is due to the openness of our relationship and the way we tend to communicate. No matter what the circumstance, we always stay true to each other. We are able to understand our feelings throughout our conversations due to the openness we have with each other.

 

The Johari window diagram is an excellent tool for understanding the way we communicate with each other. It is helpful when moving from the hidden quadrant open quadrant as we stay focused on each other's feelings and emotions.

 

After applying these methods to our conversations between my wife and me, it became evident how we see each other. As I work on how to become a better husband and parent in our recent conversation, my wife says she sees me as protective, caring, and honest when having open conversations with her. This is not what I expected, as this is not the appraisal of myself. It is somewhat a shock to see that, for the unknown quadrant, she sees all these qualities in me still today after being injured for so long due to my combat injuries. In a sense, she has given me a morale boost because some of the things she said I thought she did not see in me anymore. I can see that we are able to communicate when we both understand each other's feelings.

 

All in all, I believe the Johari window diagram is a definite helpful tool that helps us communicate better as a couple. It is helpful in how we can move from the hidden quadrant to the open quadrant with ease, thus allowing us to express each other's feelings and points of view.

 

I partially agree with the guidelines outlined in the textbook because although it provides some good points the self-disclosure, this was a rough one for me up until a couple of months ago. I had mentioned in my previous essay I was blown up on my deployment and the experiences in combat led me to isolate and shut down from the world. Well, as most psychiatrists and doctors will tell you, one of the essential methods of recovery is to self-disclose when trying to heal. 

 

The self-disclose method is something that I plan to implement in my recovery because up until recently, I was so closed off and would shut down as soon as my doctors would ask me to share my experiences so that they could find ways to help me heal both mentally and physically. As one of my doctors stated, going forward, the best way to get treatment is to open up about my experiences, as that will help me through the healing process. However, this may create some uncomfortable situations. I have to do my best in trying to open up to my medical team in hopes of getting to a better place both physically and mentally.
