Life as a programmer...

In the real world, often you will be asked to program something that somebody else started but they are long gone. Particularly beginning programmers do lots of "maintenance work." Figuring out somebody else's code can be more difficult than writing it in the first place. That's where hierarchy charts come in -- they make the existing code more understandable -- IF they exist. My experience is that hierarchy charts sometimes exist and sometimes they don't.
