Light crude oil is imported and stored on site in a 10m high bunded tank with a floating roof. The crude oil pump is located in the bunded area. The crude oil is pumped via a pipe at the continuous volumetric flow rate of 1million tonnes per annum to a fractionating column some 50m from the tank. The feed to the column is 20m above ground level. The oil goes through 6 right angle bends and a control valve with 2 block valves in a manifold with a second pump ready to be brought online in the event of a failure. Determine the size of pipe you will need to minimise cost. Design a pump suitable for this task. Consider where this volume sits on a pump curve and determine if more than one pump is required. You can assume the tank is at 25 degrees C and that its density is 0.8kg/m3. What, if any, operational aspects will occur as the tank is emptied?
