Music, Art, and Play Integrated Unit Plan (Pre-k New York)

(Final Assignment) Information

For your final assignment in this course, you will develop a 2-week unit plan (10 instructional days) that focuses on music, art, and game skills in pre-K but also integrates reading/language arts and your choice of Math, Science, or Social Studies. Please remember to make your ideas. Remember to bring the standards of his state (New York) and put all the references and citations of your research.

STEP 1 (Grade Level)

The theme of your unit plan has already been determined: "Friendship." How you approach this topic is entirely up to you. You can go down the path of teaching about character, diversity, what it means to be a good friend, etc.

Once class starts, you'll want to identify the grade level for your unit plan (this is an early childhood course, so keep your unit plans at Grade 3 and below). Once you have decided on a grade level, you will use the provided concept map template to begin brainstorming possible activity/lesson ideas. Remember that this is a 10-day unit plan and not a daily lesson plan. You'll share "big" ideas instead of step-by-step plans for each day.

While we encourage you to look online and from other available resources for ideas, keep in mind that your unit plan should be your original plan and not a copy of a resource you find. If they are not your ideas, it will result in a failing grade for this assignment and possible disciplinary action by the university.

STEP 2 (Unit Plan Draft)

Once you have selected your theme and have brainstormed ideas about the direction you'd like to go, you need to begin planning the overall unit plan. Again, please review the sample that has been provided for you.

This is where you will identify the national and state standards on which your content will focus. For this task, we need to address the standards for the following content areas: Reading/Language Arts, Art, Music, Play, and your choice of either Math, Science, or Social Studies. After you have identified the standards and directed your content to address those standards, you will want to list out your instructional strategies and assessments. When thinking about instructional strategies, don't forget to include all types of learning styles. Likewise, when it comes to assessments, you should be thinking of varied assessments (informal and formal) and formative and summative assessments for your overall unit. As you notice in the provided example, you also need to be considering how to engage your classroom families with your unit study.

STEP 3 (Unit Timeline)

Now that you have researched the standards and developed the activities and assessments you would like to incorporate into your unit plan, it is time to begin plotting out the timeline for your instruction.

You will notice that, while the timeline is thorough, it does not list step-by-step what will take place each day. Remember, you are thinking "big picture" and not assembling a day-by-day lesson plan.

The timeline gives you an opportunity to see how topics integrate with one another and to ensure that there is a natural flow of instruction.

STEP 4 (The Unit Plan - Final Draft)

When you are prepared to begin putting together the final unit plan, you will need to download the template from either the Course Resources folder or from the Unit Plan assignment folder.

You must use the template to submit your unit plan assignment. When preparing to submit your final draft, be sure that your assignment has the following items in this order:

  • Unit Plan
  • Integrating Music, Art, and Play Activity
  • Music, Art, and Play Learning Centers Assignment
