- As the source for some Planned Anti-Bias Curriculum choose a children's book about a Peace "Hero" or a "Shero" (this term identifies a female "hero.")
- Do not choose a book about a war hero.
- Do not use a book about presidents.
- Look for people you may not have heard about or whose story isn't well known.
- Be sure the person has or had, the goal of making the world a better, kinder, more just world. The person may be alive or deceased.
- You can use information from a reliable source on the internet, or any of the links below as a resource.

Things to Do:
A) Format/Bibliography
Author's name, Book title, illustrator's name.
What is the recommended age group? (This is for early childhood programs)
B) Book Choice:
Does this book have a multicultural or anti-bias focus?
Where did you find this book?
C) Summary:
Identify the HERO/SHERO and write clearly about their contribution of peace, justice, or kindness to the world.
Give the reason why you chose this person as your "Hero" or "Shero"
The summary must be clear that I can understand your intentions and the content of the story.
D) CURRICULUM/Hands-on Learning Activities
- Choose any 2 of the curriculum areas below, AND describe 1 activity for both curriculum areas you chose. (reminder: ONLY 2 curriculum areas; 1 activity each.)
- Choose 2 curriculum areas:
- Is it an ART experience? What materials do you need?
- Is it a Dramatic PLAY experience? (Also known as "dress-up play.") What props will you use?
- Is it a LANGUAGE/LITERACY activity? (Is reading or writing involved?) What will the children do? Does it include a second language?
- Is it a MUSIC/ MOVEMENT experience? Is the music from another culture?
- Is it an OUTDOOR experience where children can do an activity connected to your "Hero" or "Shero?" Is there a field trip, museum, or location of interest connected to this person?
- Remember: These are "hands-on" learning experiences that you could offer children to make connection to the person you chose. In other words, how can children PLAY with these experiences to understand the story "Hero or Shero" from the book you selected?
- The activities must be age-appropriate for 4-5 years-olds. (or not older than 7 yrs.)
- Review the "Hero/Shero" Rubric for grading criteria.
- These HANDS-ON learning experiences will help children connect to the story, the values, and the life of the person you chose in a fun way of learning.
