There are three (3) videos you can select from. ONLY SELECT ONE (1) TO WATCH FOR THIS DISCUSSION POST.
Tony Salvador: The Listening Bias(Links to an external site.)
Anna Foxall: Active Listening(Links to an external site.)
Julian Treasure: How to Speak So That People Want To Listen(Links to an external site.)
This discussion consists of the following:
- You are required to watch one (1) of the above videos.
- After watching the video you selected from the list above, you must paraphrase the video. You will not be able to see other initial posts from your class until your initial post is completed. DO NOT TALK BETWEEN GROUP MEMBERS.
- Your paraphrase must include the following:
- State your interest in understanding the other person; examples include "I sense that . . ." "If I understand you correctly, you . . ." and "It sounds as if you . . . ."
- Interpret the other person's emotion or feeling, but make sure you find alternatives to the words being used. For example, if a person says, "I'm angry," you will need to decide whether this means the person is annoyed, irritated, disgusted, or furious. Try to find a word that matches the person's meaning and emotion.
- Describe the situation, event, or facts in your own word
- Once you have completed your initial post, answer the discussion questions listed below for each individual peer post (you will respond to 2 different initial posts).
- Discussion Question/Prompts:
- Choose two examples from the paraphrased TedTalk that best represent an effective paraphrase. Explain how your two examples represent an effective paraphrase (use text to support)
- How well did the best paraphrases match the content, depth, meaning, and language of the speaker?
- Based on the paraphrase you reviewed, give two suggestions to your peer to ensure they use paraphrasing effectively when listening and explain why you believe your two suggestions are important/meaningful to the listening process.
