Mahal Imports Limited imports and markets basmati rice called Bombay Basmati. The rice is grown and packaged in India. In order to 'bulk up' the rice content the manufacturer included melamine as an ingredient. Melamine is a compound used in the manufacture of plastics; if consumed by humans, it can cause serious medical problems with the kidneys and bladder and, in severe cases, kidney failure.

Michael purchased a bag of Bombay Basmati from a store run by Mahal Imports Limited. A few weeks after the consumption of rice regularly Michael became severely ill. Eventually, Michael's doctor traced the problem to a form of poisoning by the rice. Unfortunately, Michael's kidneys were so damaged he will have severe kidney problems for the rest of his life.
