"Many different concepts worldwide intend to encourage rehabilitation and the well-being of prisoners and guards. Some of these ideas try to ensure that the human rights of inmates are respected by providing access to healthcare, tolerable living conditions, protection from abuse and violence, etc (Allen, 2012). In European countries, inmates have the right to receive essential healthcare services such as medical treatment, mental health support, and access to the appropriate medication. For example, the Netherlands offers services for drug addiction treatment, which include full availability of detoxification, in-patient psychological treatment, and substitution therapy, such as methadone treatment, to ensure that the inmates who need it have access to it. They also have an extensive provision for outpatient psychological treatment for individuals who need it. On the other hand, Bangkok highlights the importance of reducing women's imprisonment by encouraging staff training on gender sensitivity, discrimination, sexual harassment, and the needs of women prisoners (UNODC, 2015). Rules 32 and 33 of the Bangkok Rules state that the staff should have basic training on women's health, first aid, and essential medicine, followed by child development and healthcare response in the event that the child stays with their mother in prison. Finally, treating prisoners with more dignity and respect by offering education, vocational training, work opportunities, and programs to address these individuals' needs is essential to attempting to have a more humane and efficient criminal justice system (Suntinger & Meissner, 2017). Like Rule #4 of Nelson Mandela's Rules, it is essential to recognize that imprisonment should not only focus on depriving an individual of their liberty but also serve a constructive role in keeping society safe from crime."
