You are vice president of a medium-sized corporation that believes strongly in promoting from within. You have two jobs to fill: If you do not know the job description of these positions, research them.

• General manager, Midwestern Division.

• Project manager, Internet marketing

On your desk are five resumes of individuals you have interviewed. The first four are inside applicants and the fifth an outside candidate:

Peter Evans, 49. Evans, a white male, has been with the company for 18 years. He has been in charge of the information technology department for the past 10 years. His employees praise him for his easygoing management style and computer skills. He is married with three children.

Shelly Padova, 35. Padova, a white female, has been with the company for 10 years. She started working in the shipping department, spent 4 years in sales, and for the past 3 years has been the manager of the company's Mexico City office. She is fluent in Spanish and French.

Jamal Davidson, 29. Davidson, an African American male, has worked for the company for 3 years as supervisor in the production department. Production efficiency in his work crew is the highest in the company. Prior to joining the company, Davidson worked at a petrochemical refinery as supervisor.

Veronica Fernandez, 23. Fernandez, a Hispanic American female, recently received an MBA from the state university. Her undergraduate degree is in marketing. She has worked for the company as an intern while attending school.

Susan Brown, 63. A black female in a wheel chair, has an AA degree in computer science worked for an electronics company for 10 years as an administrative assistant to the president, ran her own apparel manufacturing company for 20 years generating $10 million in sales/year which she sold 2 years ago

1. Analyze each job. List at least 5 types of skills you think each position would require and listed in the job

description?

2. What do you think of the company's policy of promoting from within? Would you consider outside applicants for either of these positions? Why or why not?

3. Which applicant would you hire for each position? Explain why, taking into consideration their skills, ability, and

experience as it relates to the position?

4. Which characteristics of the applicants should not be considered when making a hiring decision?

5. Provide a link to an article in which an employee strike took place through a union. Discuss the impact it had on the company, the employees and the customers. Was the strike a good idea? Briefly discuss why or why not.
