Mandy Wickliffe, is a part time color technician at a local hair salon in Reno, Nevada, and she has the goal of one day passing the state of Nevada Cosmetologist test and cutting women's hair.

After receiving her monthly salary check she decided to go on a shopping spree with her four young children. They go to a local grocery store and Mandy explained to the children that each child is allowed to get only one item that costs less than $4. Randy, the oldest decides to get to two SlimJim's, Ruby gets a new toy, Marlene chooses some snacks, and Skylar, the youngest, chooses a six pack of Jones Cane Soda.

After returning home, Mandy goes into her bedroom and falls asleep. A few hours later she hears a terrifying scream and wakes up to find Skylar laying on the floor in a pile of blood with a broken glass soda bottle near him. She calls 911 and an ambulance rushes him to the hospital and he is treated for severe injuries. Two weeks later he is released from the hospital with permanent scars all over his face, blindness in his left eye, and psychological problems from the incident.
