Marie is a project manager at a marketing firm in Minneapolis. She has worked at the firm for 3 years and she tends not to socialize with her colleagues. She is also an "only"the only woman of color working at the firm in a leadership role. One day, she is having lunch in the lounge area and two colleagues join her. As they eat, they begin a discussion about current events, including recent Black Lives Matter protests in the Minneapolis area. One of their local clients had their storefront vandalized. Marie expresses that although she sympathizes with the client, she also hopes that the random acts of violence do not overshadow the important message of the protesters. Her colleagues appear to be confused by her response. One of them asks, "How could you say that?" Marie explains that as a woman of color, she understands the daily frustrations and fears that come with being a person of color in America. One of her colleagues responds, "That seems a bit overdramatic, don't you think? I mean, I don't even think of you as Mexican." The second colleague says, "Exactly, you're so well-educated and articulate. You're not like these thugs in the street." The first colleague emphasizes this point, explaining, "Yeah, I mean your English is perfect and clients love you. You're one of us." Marie is at a loss for how to respond. First, she isn't Mexican; she is Puerto Rican and self-identifies as Afro-Caribbean. Second, she is taken aback by her colleagues so quickly invalidating her feelings and perspective. Third, she is incredibly uncomfortable with the conversation taking place.
