Marilyn Monroe Makeovers - Abridged
On Balboa Island near San Diego, in the shadow of the famous Hotel Del Coronado,
where Marilyn Monroe starred in one of her most famous roles in Some Like It Hot, lies a
unique beauty salon called Marilyn Monroe Makeovers or MMM for short. MMMs
founders, Lucy and Ethel, got the idea for their business from TV talk shows where they
observed that ordinary people delighted in letting a team of beauty consultants make
them over in a new image by changing their hair, grooming, cosmetics, clothes, and
sometimes even their demeanor. Lucy and Ethel at first exclusively targeted women who
wanted to look and feel like Marilyn Monroe, but they discovered over time that there
was a market for men who wanted to be made over in the image of some of the men in
Marilyns life like Arthur Miller, Joe DiMaggio, or Clark Gable. Based on their robust
business in Southern California, they were thinking of expanding to other locations (like
Michigan and Wisconsin) and even to other stars (like Claudette Colbert and Audrey
Hepburn), but for the present, their booming Balboa business consumed all their energies.
Once MMM completes the initial makeover for a client, they then assign a client number
and note the persons address, and telephone number. Each makeover consultation lasts
1-5 hours and is always finished in one day. All consultations are done via credit terms.
Clients are to pay in full for all consultations received in a particular month by the 20th of
the following month, partial payments are not accepted from clients, and each payment
received from a client is accompanied by a remittance advice number previously sent to
them by MMM. Repeat business is a major part of the MMM marketing plan, and many
clients use MMM multiple times, although Lucy and Ethels exorbitant pricing structures
do sometimes encourage clients to use other establishments for more routine beauty and
grooming services.
Each employee is added to the database at the time of hire. A consultation is always
directed by one employee who plans the makeover and performs some or all of the work.
This director is assisted by 1-3 other employees in about 70% of the consultations.
Employees often serve as both directors and assistants on a given day, depending upon
the flow of customers. For costing and quality control purposes, MMM notes the
directing or assisting roles and times of each person who works on a particular makeover.
Consultations come in several varieties, ranging from the Major Marilyn Makeover to
the "Joe DiMaggio CT". Products such as cosmetics, clothing, jewelry, wigs, hairpieces,
Marilyn paraphernalia, etc. are used in over 90% of the consultations. Obviously,
directors push as many products as they can on to each client, although some clients resist
products altogether. Products are only sold in conjunction with a consultation.
Products are purchased from various vendors around the country. Each product type is
given a product number and is usually supplied by multiple vendors. Before any
purchases take place with a vendor, that supplier is asked to provide an undiscounted
price quote for each type of item it would like to supply to MMM. As a marketing tactic,
vendors as well as prospective vendors sometimes provide free product samples to MMM
for use in consultations. A buying employee often negotiates quantity discounts for
products relative to a given purchase, and MMM prefers to buy in large lots if a need for
hot items is able to be anticipated. Purchase payment terms depend upon the vendor
and range from all payments due at the end of the following month to installment
payment terms of up to one year. Lucy and Ethel use multiple cash accounts for their
receipts and disbursements, although each transaction involves just one account. Not all
purchases involve acquisition of makeover products, not all cash disbursements pertain to
purchases, and not all cash receipts are from makeover clients. Each cash disbursement
must be approved in advance, and such authorization is signaled by a distinct voucher
number. Buyers are often the same people who do the makeovers, and MMM does not
distinguish between the different types of employees (i.e., employees are all maintained
in a single table in the database).
