Mark is a star running back for the ECSU football team. He is the midst of abreakout junior year in which he is leading the country in rushing yards. His football success hasnever been higher, but despite this success, he is having a lot of personal issues that arepotentially damaging. With the new found success and sport light, Mark's ego has inflated anddecided that he thought he was too good to attend Professor Jay's Sport Psychology class, doesn't show up for two tests and is failing his class. He starts doing this for his other classes aswell. Since he didn't attend classes, Mark's grades suffered and he began failing his other classesas well. The professors reported their grades to the Head Coach who decided to take disciplinaryaction and not allow Mark to play again until he get his grades up to an acceptable standard.During the span in which Mark had to sit out, ECSU lost all of their games. Teammates started toblame Mark's ego for their losses. In addition to this, scouts took notice and Mark's draft stockbegan to plummet. In addition his girlfriend just revealed to him that she is pregnant with hischild. After regaining his eligibility, in the second day of practice, Mark was visibly distractedand was going through a drill carelessly and ended up tearing every major ligament in his knee. The doctors tell Mark that there is an 85% chance that he will never play football again. Whenthe doctors tell Mark about the severity of the injury he goes through different stages. First Markis very angry and hostile towards everyone, and often throws things he can manage to grab andyelling at everyone including his girlfriend. Following the initial anger Mark begins to gothrough a stage where he believes that his injury is not that serious and tells the coaches that hestill believes that he can play despite the injury. After a couple weeks Mark must decide how heis going to cope with the injury. When he is in the rehab, he finds out that a football player fromHampton University, who tore his ACL on the same day, would be at the same rehab facility.During the rehab process, Mark will often measure his success based on the exercises hecompletes, and how fast he completes them to the Hampton University player. Mark for themajority of the time performs worse. During the rehab, due to his anger, not a lot of histeammates or coaches call or visit him during his rehab. However his girlfriend and his parentsare always there to help him in his recovery.
- what antecedent could have helped lead up to his injury? Which stage model is Mark going through when dealing with his injury right after it occurred? What type of goals approach is Mark using when he is comparing his rehab to the Hampton player's? Is this good or bad? Tell me your reasoning. If it is bad, tell me why he shouldn't use that goal approach. If it is good, tell me why? Be specific from the notes in class.
