Mary is a 33-year-old married Latina female elementary school teacher. Approximately two weeks ago, Mary was walking her dog after work when she witnessed a man on a bike get hit by a car that ran through a stop sign and left the scene. Mary and two other bystanders ran to help the man. There was a lot of blood, and the man appeared to have sustained serious injuries. Mary reported feeling "numb" and called 911 at the urging of the other bystanders, while they attempted to talk with the man and reassure him until the paramedics arrived.

Since the incident, Mary, typically very outgoing and empathic, has reported feeling detached from her students and her partner and having trouble sleeping. She stated that she has nightmares every night that include vivid images of the incident.

Mary has decided to seek help from a therapist. After hearing Mary's story and symptoms, the therapist comes up with treatment options.
