Mary Rose is an experienced court reporter for the Daily News, a national newspaper. She attends the hearing of a sexual assault charge in the County Court in Melbourne.

On the first day of the trial, Judge Harper makes an order prohibiting the publication of the name of a witness, who is ten years old. The order prohibits the publication of the witnesses' name for twenty years in any part of Australia.

Mary is furious. She runs to the front of the court and loudly objects to the making of the order. The Judge orders Mary to sit down and be quiet, stating that he will deal with the issue later on. Mary refuses to sit down or wait, stating that the public has a right to know what happens in court. The Judge orders Mary to leave the courtroom for the duration of the proceeding, which reluctantly she does.
