MAT 510 - Homework Assignment Homework Assignment 3 Due in Week 3 and worth 30 points The following data consists of the actual time used and potential (the best time possible for this review process) to complete each step in the review process. The actual times are based on the review of 30 projects. The potential times are subjective engineering judgment estimates. What are the sources of value-added and non-value-added work in this process? a. Value Added - Write, type, proof, sign, copy, and distribute cover letter Write, type, proof, sign, copy, and distribute confirmation letter Write, type, proof, sign, copy, and distribute basic data acceptance letter b. Non-Value-Added - Lead engineer calls key people to schedule meeting Queue Read basic data package Hold meeting; develop path forward and concerns Review notes from meeting Resolve open issues Project leader and specialist develop missing information Determine plant preferred vendors 2. Where are the main opportunities to improve the cycle time of this process, with respect to both actual time used and the potential best times? Steps 2, 3, 4, 5, and 11. What strategy would you use? find and eliminate non-value-added work. Hoerl, R., & Snee, R. D. (2012). Statistical Thinking: Improving Business Performance, 2nd Edition. Step 10: Resolve Open Issues required 104 hours (potential) versus 106 hours (actual). Is there an OFI here? Yes Why or why not? Issues present opportunities. Staff managers should develop strategies to resolve issues quickly and effectively. If so, how would you attack it? Develop 8 to 12 hour committees on a monthly to address open issues in the organization. 4. What do you think are the most difficult critical issues to deal with when designing a sound cycle time study such as this one? Capturing the potential time needed for meetings. Meetings take up a considerable time in business. They are a necessity, however I have found they have a set structure but become fluid once you add the human element. What are the sources of value-added and non-value-added work in this process? Value Added = Step 1, Step 6, Step 7, Step 8, Step 9,: Non-value-added = Step 2, Step 3, Step 4, Step 5, Step 10, Step 11 2. Where are the main opportunities to improve the cycle time of this process, with respect to both actual time used and the potential best times? What strategy would you use? I think cutting the time for all tasks would help. Keeping the teams on track and focused are key. 3. Step 10: Resolve Open Issues required 104 hours (potential) versus 106 hours (actual). Is there an OFI here? Why or why not? If so, how would you attack it? Keeping the teams on task would be a huge OFI. Overestimating is going to happen but if you are prepared and on track you can cut the times. 4. What do you think are the most difficult critical issues to deal with when designing a sound cycle time study such as this one? I think the biggest issues would be to accurately manage both value-added and non-value-added work. Allocating the time it takes for each step and re-allocating the time when needed seems to be the challenge.
