Checkpoints: Get points In this episode, Riley's asking for more kinds of info-stuff about customers, promo events, etc. The data model Max built before (Pitch, Meeting, Meeting Attendance & Contact) was ok then but now she has to add onto it \& she shows you the E-R diagram she used to map out the new version. BUT, as a puzzle for you, she marked out some key parts of the diagram for you to fill back in! To get your points, read the story a then match up the given labels \& symbols to the right places in Max's new ER diagram where she marked them out. Tips: Get more Check out the original The Matrix if you've never seen it. It's mind-expanding! Resources: Get help You won't need any help with this one. So, Riley's smart. Like Morpheus-from-The-Matrix-smart. Always figuring new angles on how to make this whole startup deal work. And now I feel like her Trinity, with my new skills (minus the martial arts \& weapons, etc). She keeps throwing out new stuff she wants to know to help her figure her next steps. I keep cranking on the database to feed her the info she needs, just in time. Check this. It'll "bake your noodle." Again, it seemed simple at first. Remember from last post? I had to break the original Pitch object apart into different objects ("entities") to keep the data true/clean ("integrity"). But you could still make SF "crawl" the lookup fields ("relationships") between them to re-connect everything when you needed to see the data together in one piece, right? Like pulling up that email list of contacts from her Mountain View pitches so she could invite them to a reception she was planning there. (Hopefully you tried it out \& got it to work, too.) Ok, so that was a real thing I had to figure out \& I had to make work (in a hurry) for lots of receptions in all different places. And then she wanted to be able to look up who came to which ones, but also just from this one investment firm or that-so she had an edge, going into a meeting, knowing who she was getting "traction" with. See, once you "take the red pill," you find out there's this startup-world matrix of funders, competitors, partners, customers, and influencers (bloggers, reviewers, etc) feeding the whole thing \& you've got to get "traction" to survive. That means getting known/connected, building presence and, hopefully, building a fast-growing customer base, etc so the matrix knows you and sees you as a legit bet. Riley's got that down but she needed answers from the data to make her best moves. That's where I came in. But...! So my little baby database needed to grow up if it was going to be able to answer Riley's questions. Ouch. I had to figure out how and where to add stuff to it and that's where that E-R diagramming stuff came in super-handy. It helped me "see" what parts to add where to make sure the whole database structure stayed "normalized" (no data redundancylintegrity problems) and could still get Riley what she wanted. "Right now, I can only see the data on the funding firms that I have an ongoing pitch with, right? Well, I need the list to ALSO show the firms I already pitched \& lost/failed, plus the ones I'm planning to pitch iflwhen I can. That way I can look across all the funding firms to see what's working (or not) \& what to try. So, turns out, your Pitches list actually needs to be a Funding Firms list withe same data as before but also, for each firm, is the pitch is ongoing, overlfailed, or not started yet. "And the funding firms l'm pitching or planning to pitch-they're all invested in lots of other startups already. I need to be able to pull lists of funding firms \& the startups that each one's invested in already. And are those startups B2Bs like us or B2Cs? What's their rev model (sales, subscriptions, odvertising, etc)? Product category? Target market, etc?" "I can Google all that but that takes forever \& it needs to be in your app so I can see it all lined up how I want \& listed out by rev model, or whatever, so I can suss out the prime targets \& then pitch them how we fit the same profile as the other startups they're holding. Or maybe I pitch how we're different and we could fill a gap in their portfolio by adding a new target market or whatever. Either way, I need the intel and I need you to get it in there for me!" "I also need to be able to say 'Yes, we're not generating revenue yet BUT our contacts at our target customer firms are eager to get their hands on our technology. AND if they ask me like wholwhere, I need to pull up contoct names \& their firm names quick, by their annual revenue, their market andlor their status as target customers with us (eg tentative vs committed)." "Last, when I'm going into a meeting at a funding firm, I need your app to give me some intel on the contacts l'm about to meet with-which of them did we invite to which of our events \& did they actually show up? So I can say like Hii, Topher, Diane, thanks a ton for coming to our Mountain View reception last month! Sorry you couldn't make it, Darby, but I know you hit our booth at South by Southwest in March. If you can just import that data into our database, then bingo! I check it on my way to my meeting \& be set to build the buzz. Perfect." All I had to do was map all that stuff out, piece by piece, so I could organize it visually \& make sense of it all. Then I could just add the new objects in SF & get the data in there so Riley could pull out what she needed and, hey... Trinity crushes it! Now to find your inner Trinity, here's my diagram of the old model plus the new parts added. But I blanked out the labels, etc as a little puzzle for you. All the parts are below, scrambled up.
