Match the steps, in summary writing, with the descriptions.
This is a slower and very careful second or third reading of the text. We can underline important information and even annotate in the margin if the text has been photocopied. In this stage we should double check any key words we do not know so that all main points are fully understood.

In this stage, on a separate piece of paper, extract the underlined information and any annotations from the margins. Focus on main points and supporting points but do not include supporting details or examples. Use a neat "linear" page layout with those main idea on the left margin and the supporting points set in underneath. You will start to see the structure (or outline) of the text! Remember to do all this in your own words so when you paraphrase later in the summary, you get away from the original and avoid plagiarism!
Proofread your summary to double-check you have included all the main points. Make sure you have included a reference to the original source and sometimes the author.
