Material- I believe an innovative technological solution that would help protect the homeland while making our communities safer would be to eliminate texting while driving. Car and cell phone manufacturers should prevent texting and driving by law. Artificial intelligence, driver monitoring systems, and the mobile phone itself should be able to work together to prevent the person controlling the moving vehicle from reading or writing text messages. The requirement would only apply to texting and would not prevent hands-free calls, Bluetooth calls, navigation, or other activities where the driver is not holding or looking at the phone. This feature should be able to detect if passengers are using a mobile phone so that it does not affect them. This technological innovation could reduce the 1.6 million car accidents caused by phone users (Hart, 2022). Texting while driving is responsible for 25 percent of car accidents, and eight deaths in the United States are due to distracted drivers (Hart, 2022). Implementing this can make our communities safer by keeping the driver's eyes on the road instead of the phone. Basically, I think that if there was some kind of app or software that was built into every vehicle and every phone that didn't allow anyone to use their device hands-on while the vehicle is started there would be no accidents or tickets given out because the software physically doesn't allow it. On the horrible side of things if there was software that stopped texting while driving it could affect everyone in the vehicle unless there was a way to detect whose driving also if someone was kidnapped and forced to drive how are they supposed to get help without alerting the kidnapping if the device doesn't allow you to text or use touch screen capabilities but that's really the only issue with that. But that's obviously a worse-case scenario and the only flaw that may get in the way of the great no-hands-on tech while driving software idea.
