May I get some feedback on the following 3Statistics Takeaways?
1 This course has given me some general knowledge that I previously did not have when it comes to statistics. I feel that I am able to articulate my analytic thoughts more now. For example, before this course I may have had a gut feelings about trends, but now I have the ability to actually calculate the data so I don't make an uninformed decision based on something else. Likewise, I feel that as a consumer my ability to make good spending choices has improved. By watching prices over time on major purchases, I should be able to predict when and where are the best places and times to buy.
If statistics comes up in a future work of study or if I see a statistics based article, I feel confident that the general knowledge I have will help me to better to understand it, whereas in the past I probably would have been clueless.
As far as the class itself, I think it was well run and I was able to get into a routine each week by watching videos, reading the book chapters, then going to practices and quizzes before discussions. I appreciate the feedback from everyone and I think everybody was respectful and I appreciate that type of learning environment.
2 My biggest takeaway from this course is learning the different techniques that are used to calculate data for statistics. When I started this course, I knew statistics was finding, analyzing, and interpreting data, but never realized how much detail it consisted of. Throughout the course, we learned about binomial distribution, normal distribution, z-scores, probabilities and so much more. While it was challenging at times to comprehend all the different techniques, it was even more rewarding when I was finally able to understand the material. When I see the results of a study or poll being mentioned, now I have the understanding to realize all the variables that went into obtaining those results.
Watching the videos that were provided and solving the problems that were throughout the course were extremely helpful for me to grasp the concepts of this course. The discussion posts were interesting to participate in and insightful to read the interpretation from other classmates. Creating examples for the discussion posts was fascinating because I had to grasp the material and find a way to put it into an example. I still believe statistics can be intermediating, but now I have enough knowledge to be able to tackle it. I also have a greater appreciation for those who work in the field of statistics, and all the critical thinking they have to use while doing so.
3 My biggest takeaway is actually getting through the course after not taking any college courses in years. I was not sure what to expect but I stuck with it, followed the lesson plans for each week, learned a lot and proved to myself that I can handle it. Specific to statistics, my biggest takeaway was how the functions work in Excel, and make calculating data very easy. I like how probabilities can be applied to everyday life. The discussions like 'grading on a curve' week, were interesting.
