Reconstruction 1865-1877 (decade that followed the Civil War, when attempts were made to rebuild the union and to repair the inequities of slavery and its political, social, and economic legacy. Reconstruction Amendments to the Constitution reflect these goals:

13th Amendment: 1865 makes slavery illegal, except for those convicted of a crime

14th Amendment: 1868 grants citizenship to people born in the US including former slaves and gives equal protection under the law.

15th Amendment: 1870 protects voting rights for citizens regardless of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

Jim Crow Era 1877-1965 The roughly 100 year period following Reconstruction when states nullified the promise of freedom for African-Americans and developed violent forms of race-based social control. The Jim Crow era ended with the Civil Rights Act: 1964; Voting Rights Act: 1965
