Measures of central tendency offer various insights into a set of scores and can be defined as numbers that describe what is average or typical of the distribution. The mean, median, and mode, depict the average or typical distribution of numbers within the dataset. My dissertation research focuses on understanding the impact of healthcare leadership on mitigating burnout among healthcare workers, measures of central tendency such as mean, median, and mode can be utilized to analyze burnout levels across various methods of leadership styles. For example, computing the mean burnout scores for healthcare workers under different leadership styles can unveil important trends and patterns. According to Laschinger et al. (2012), their study incorporated the measures of the mean to determine that authentic leadership and emotional exhaustion showed notable impacts on job satisfaction, which correlated with reduced intentions to leave the job. Jankowski and Flannelly's study (2015), indicated that measures of central tendency demonstrated and explain the similarities and differences among summary measures of data collected in a healthcare focused topic. This aligns with my dissertation study on healthcare workers.

How I would utilize measures of central tendency in my dissertation research is by conducting a survey among healthcare workers to evaluate their burnout levels. The next step would consist of gathering data on their perceptions of leadership behaviors within their units or facilities and use the application of measures of central tendency. By analyzing the mean, median, and mode of the collected burnout levels and leadership behavior ratings, I can gain insights into typical levels of burnout and common perceptions of leadership among the surveyed healthcare workforces. These measures can potentially help in understanding the central trends and values of the data, aiding in the interpretation of survey findings. In my personal experience with measures of central tendency, using these tools can provide valuable assistance with understanding and comparing data to another research.
