Melania and John are operating an absorber that removes carbon dioxide from a gas stream. A stream of pure liquid water (H2O) enters the top of the column while a vapor stream enters at 40.4mol/min from the bottom of the column. The entering vapor contains nitrogen (N2) and carbon dioxide (CO2), and the mole fraction of carbon dioxide is 0.356 . The column operates at steady state when the pressure and temperature are 53.7psig and 4.12C, respectively. The exiting liquid stream and entering vapor streams are in vapor-liquid equilibrium when 90.2% of the entering carbon dioxide exits in the liquid phase. Neither water or nitrogen change phase in the absorber. Determine the following three unknowns. Mole fraction of carbon dioxide in the exiting liquid = Total flow rate of the exiting gas stream = mol/min Flow rate of water entering the absorber = mol/min
