Mernav Electronics makes marine GPS units for boats. Each GPS unit passes through the assembly department and the testing department. The assembly department is the focus of this problem. The process costing system at Mernav has a single direct-cost category (direct materials) and a single indirect-cost category (conversion costs). Direct materials are added at the beginning of the process. Conversion costs are added evenly during the process. When the assembly department finishes work on each GPS unit, it is immediately transferred to the testing department. Mernav uses the weighted average method of process costing. Data for the assembly department for July 2019 are as follows: Direct Materials Conversion Costs $ 1,248,000 $ 241,650 Work in Process, July 1 (a) Started during July 2019 Completed during July 2019 Work in Process, July 31 (b) Total Costs added during July 2019 Physical Units (GPS Units) 4,000 22,500 26,000 500 $ 4,635,000 $ 2,575,125 (a) Degree of completion, July 1: Direct Materials 100%; Conversion Costs 45% (b) Degree of completion, July 31: Direct Materials 100%; Conversion Costs 65% Required: 1. Calculate the cost per equivalent unit for direct materials and conversion costs. 2. Summarize total costs to account for, and assign total costs to units completed and to units in ending work in process 3. Assume that the company uses the FIFO method, complete the above questions using the FIFO method
