Methods of Research, Problem definition tool

Abstract Burglary is defined by Cambridge Dictionary as the crime of illegally entering a building and stealing things. Crime will always be inevitable despite the economic status of a country. It is indeed a global problem and unfortunately, the Philippines has not fallen under the safety bracket. It has been long-standing and is arguably the most complex puzzle to solve in the country, along with the traffic, of course. According to the Philippine National Police (PNP) Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management, theft, physical assault, and robbery were among the most common crimes reported to local authorities in 2019. Both theft and robbery are definitely related burglary which creates a strong statement. According to Statista, in 2017, the number of robbery cases in the Philippines was approximately 16.1 thousand. The highest number of robberies in the Philippines was in 2013, with over 43 thousand cases. In 2018, Theft accounted for 31 percent with Robbery sitting on third spot at 14 percent of the entire criminal cases in the Philippines. The overall number of theft cases amounted to 23.6 thousand in that year. Despite the decline of the data presented, the volume of the cases related to burglary is still alarming and a preventive mechanism must be taken into action. A tighter security system designed for Filipino homes could be a good start. This study provides a Raspberry Pi-based Security System by combining a camera, a global system for mobile communication (GSM) module, a back-up power module, a passive infrared (PIR) sensor, a piezo buzzer, and a tripwire system to create a smart system. The purpose of this device is to aid in catching culprits of burglary cases by providing video evidence of the crime in progress and to alarm the residents and the authorities about the burglary. The Smart Home-Based Security System uses the tripwire system to monitor whether someone is breaking in through the door or window. The passive infrared sensor, on the other hand, is used by the system to detect intruders outside the house during a set period of time. Data from these sensors will be sent to the Raspberry Pi for processing. If an intruder is caught, the system will use the GSM module to send a text to the residents and the authorities and sound the alarm through the piezo buzzer. At that moment, the camera will save 5-second videos at a set time interval as proof of the crime. For further security, the owners can monitor the house via the camera through the Internet by having the Raspberry Pi stream the camera footage in real-time. Lastly, the back-up power module will power the whole system during blackouts. Through this system, the homeowners will feel more safe and secure during their sleep and away from their house knowing that the smart security system is protecting their home and their lives.
