Michael is a 15-year-old boy who has attended your service to get assistance with bullying that he is experiencing at school. He attends a religious all boys school and he identifies as being gay. He is not willing to come out to his parents as they are religious, and his dad is openly critical of homosexuals, including discussing his negative opinion of gay marriage. Michael has been physically and emotionally bullied at school and does not feel that he has anyone who understands him. His grades have been dropping as he has difficulty concentrating, has been skipping classes and is often feeling sick.
He has recently said he wanted to kill himself and has marks on his arms from self-harming practices. He is fearful that his parents will kick him out of home and doesn't know where to go if that happens. He was required to speak to the school counsellor after being attacked at school but did not tell them that he was gay. His parents have sent him to get help to 'straighten him out'.
client 2 Maria
Read the case study and all documentation outlined in the instructions which are specific to this client.
Maria is a Philippines client who has dropped in to see you about her daughter. She has come to see you as she does not have anyone who she can talk to about this issue and she is concerned about what she should do. Maria's daughter is 15 and has been asking to go to the doctor to get contraception. She has stopped her from going as she does not want her daughter to have sex at this age. When Maria asked her why she wanted it she just said that: 'She wanted to be safe if it happened'. She is also worried about what her husband would say if she took her to the doctor as he does not like things happening in the house without his consent. Her husband has been violent with her before and is worried about what might happen to her daughter if he found out about this. Maria has two other children a 10 and a 12-year-old, but they have never been present when her husband has become violent, only the 15-year-old has seen her father be violent towards Maria. Maria is not concerned about the violence as this is a normal part of life.
client 3: John
John, a 19-year-old has entered the counseling agency you work in. You are a fairly new counsellor. Most of the other workers have gone home; however, your supervisor, Mary, is still seeing a client in her office. John has bandaged wrists from where he cut them with a kitchen knife last week John has recently become obsessed with a female colleague.
For months he has been trying to persuade her to go out with him, but she repeatedly refuses. He has been demonstrating his affection in an ever-increasing way, most recently buying her jewelry for Christmas. In a state of despair, in the evenings for the last few weeks, he has been drinking alcohol heavily at home. There is no history of violence but one previous conviction for possession of an offensive weapon aged 16. He has a childhood history of prolonged separation and rejection by his parents and his peers. He is so desperate that finally, he has acted out his emotions with a weapon against himself. The situation is escalating.
