Mission: Improving the room for a safe level of CO from cigarette smoking
A room with a volume of 80 m3 which currently has a ventilation rate Qin = Qout =40 m3/h assumes that the infiltrated air flow is so small that it is negligible and that CO decays with a rate constant of k =0.1 h-1 in days. There was a party of 8 people, each smoking 4 cigarettes per hour. which is the same brand of cigarettes which has a CO release rate of 125 mg CO/cigarette. Today the air outside the room has 10 mg/m3 of CO.
1.) Calculate the mass balance using the box model to calculate how much CO concentration will initially occur at Steady State.
2.) If the safe CO concentration level is 50 ppm or 55 mg/m3(refer to the Announcement of the Ministry of Interior, Thailand, regarding occupational safety regarding environmental conditions (chemicals)), calculate whether a new ventilation fan will need to be installed. What is the flow rate (in m3/h) to keep the CO concentration at a safe level?
Show calculations in detail, specifying equations, numerical values, and units for each term clearly.
