Modified atmosphere packaging is a method to preserve food by modifying the gas composition inside the packaging such as by replacing air with pure nitrogen. Consider a cylindrical packaging container that is filled with pure nitrogen at 1atm and 28C. The container is made of plastic material with a nitrogen solubility and diffusion coefficient of 0.0025kmol/m3.bar and 1.5*10. 10m2/s respectively. The inner diameter of the container is 4cm and the length is 10cm. To ensure that the packaging is adequate for its whole shelf life, the mass flowrate of nitrogen through the plastic should be kept lower than 1.0131013kmol/s. The container is to be stored at atmospheric pressure of 1atm and temperature of 28C with 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen. Assume steady state and taking the pressure of N2 to be nearly constant Determine the thickness of the plastic packaging that is needed to ensure that the maximum flowrate of nitrogen allowed is met and calculate the molar concentration of nitrogen inside the plastic at both surfaces. Assume both the top and bottom of the cylinder packaging is impermeable to nitrogen
