Read the problem set information and data below, then "complete" steps 1, 2, and 3 using SPSS. From your data, "complete" step 4.

A health psychologist is interested in the relationship between the region of United States a person was raised and number of siblings. That is, does the region of the US where a person was born relate to their number of siblings.

He randomly samples 30 participants at a local airport asking them what area of the U.S. they were raised (East or West).

The researcher recorded that 15 were born in the East part of the U.S. and 15 were born in the West part of the U.S.

He then asks each participant how many siblings, not counting themselves, each has in their family. The number of siblings is listed as numeric values in the data below.

East: 1, 3, 2, 4, 2, 1, 3, 2, 1, 2, 0, 5, 3, 0, 4

West: 0, 2, 4, 4, 5, 3, 4, 4, 3, 3, 4, 5, 5, 5, 0

TIP:You CANNOT enter the data exactly as it is shown here. You need to do something involving a condition column and values in variable view in SPSS to set up the data for the correct t-test.

Step 1: SPSS Data and Variable View

  1. Enter the data into SPSS in Data view.
  2. Complete the following five tasks in Variable view:

  4. Set the number of decimal places to match the data.
  5. Label the variables.
  6. Enter values IF it is a categorical variable.
  7. Set the measure.

Step 2: SPSS Output

  1. Based on the research scenario, determine whether you should run an Independent-Samples t-test OR a Related/Paired-Samples t-test.
  2. Run the t-test you determined best fits the research scenario.
  3. Include all options used in the example video.
  4. Use a two-tailed test (SPSS's default) with a 0.05 alpha level.
  5. Snip/export the output from SPSS.

Step 3: SPSS Bar Graph

  1. Based on the research scenario, determine the correct type of bar graph to run.
  2. In SPSS, create the type of bar graph you determined best fits the research scenario.
  3. Include the following settings:
    1. Y-axis starts at 0.
    2. Title both the X & Y-axis based on the scenario.
    3. Title both bars on the X-axis based on the scenario.
    4. Include error bars.
    5. Do not include a title above the graph.
  4. Snip/export the graph from SPSS.

  1. Based on the research scenario, select the correct APA write-up paragraph from the paragraph options below.

Note: If you select the Independent-Samples paragraph, modify the second sentence as noted if your t-test indicates no significant difference.
