Jeanette had been with Moondollar Coffee Company for 2 years. Moondollar is a non-unionized coffee shop with 80 outlets across Canada. Moondollar prides itself on innovative and delicious coffee creations such as the Butter Tart Latte and Nanaimo Bar Cappuccino. Jeanette has been really frustrated working at Moondollar lately as she makes minimum wage, and yet is expected to take on additional tasks like ordering supplies, creating displays, and some marketing tasks that she feels are outside of her normal barista job.
Jeanette has been speaking to two colleagues about her frustrations with Moondollar, and how clients are becoming more and more demanding and rude. Her colleagues agree and one mentions that her friend works at a unionized food outlet, and the union has been really supportive about pushing back on extra duties and negotiating a $2.00 an hour raise. Jeanette thinks that maybe they should have a union to represent the employees at Moondollar. Jeanette organizes a meeting at the public library for the rest of the staff to attend to talk about unionizing.
Management finds out about the meeting, and gives last minute notice that Jeanette must work that evening. Later the same evening Jeanette's supervisor provides her with a discipline letter that states that she has recently been wasting time talking to co-workers when she should be working.
The meeting with the employees takes place the next week. The day after the meeting Jeanette is suspended for three days based upon a customer complaint that she was rude and provided terrible customer service 2 months ago. Jeanette does not remember any negative client interactions.
The next week Jeanette has a client who ordered a sugar free vanilla latte. The client becomes very angry because she is sure that Jeanette has put sweetened vanilla syrup into the latte. Jeanette agrees to make a replacement latte, despite the fact she is sure that it was sugar-free vanilla syrup. Jeanette is told later that day that she is being terminated for being rude to a client again, poor work quality, and wasting product.
